State of the Union Address

How convenient is it that the Bush Administration supports “freedom in countries from Cuba and Zimbabwe to Belarus and Burma” and fails to mention that it supports tyranny and dictatorship in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Egypt. Let me guess, if the said countries opposed US policy to rule the world, the Bush Administration would be supporting “freedom” there too.

As for Iran, the lame-duck president said [with my own inserts added]: “Our message to the people of Iran is clear: We have no quarrel with you [yet the US just armed a dictator that oppressed the nation]. We respect your traditions and your history [this is said to appease ultra-nationalist Iranians who think they have a friend in the White House]. We look forward to the day when you have your freedom [“freedom” or partition?]. Our message to the leaders of Iran is also clear: Verifiably suspend your nuclear enrichment, so negotiations can begin. And to rejoin the community of nations, come clean about your nuclear intentions and past actions, stop your oppression at home, cease your support for terror abroad [I’m sorry, but Iran does not support Israel, but the US does!]. But above all, know this: America will confront those who threaten our troops. We will stand by our allies [dictator regimes], and we will defend our vital interests in the Persian Gulf [does anyone else sense the rampant imperialist tone in this statement or is it just me?].”

It’s as if the intelligence report about Iran’s nuclear program never came to light.
